I'm not entirely sure if it is applicable simply after a re-wire, but on most extensions i build, the designers generally include linked, mains wired smoke detectors, i.e. one in the hall and one on the landing or bedroom passage if bungalow.
My suspicions would say yes it is applicable. Even if it were not, you would be foolish not do do it based simply on issues of common sense.
