It mentions that interior solid wall insulation can be 90 mm thick. I can easily afford to lose that in terms of space, but what does one do about windows? They are old sashes, but in pretty good condition.
Worried that if I did this the windows would look oddly 'recessed' into the wall?

) but in other parts of the UK it is quite usual to have windows lined up with the outside of the house wall and a "Window Board" on that part of the wall under the window and inside the room. You can do it that way. Then you will have somewhere to put your pot plants. In most parts of the country this is not considered odd.
