Intermediate switch

I have a Deta intermediate switch with L1 and L2 at top and bottom
Brown in L1 and Black in L2 from one cable
Black in L1 and Brown in L2 from a different cable
The grey are connected together in the back box
I have purchased a new Crabtree switch which is intermediate but with L1,L2,L3 and L4
I am trying to work out which goes where as when I swapped it over the lights didn’t behave correctly and I had to remove it.
Any help gratefully received

As Bernard says, it should work. Unless you have changed some other wiring, somewhere else??

What did you do wrong?

I am not actually sure I think I may have got confused with the in and out marking on the new switch. In any event basically swapping over what I had already, as was pictured above, worked fine
