thanks, never gave it a thought. Replaced cat.,4yrs ago, rattling baffles.
Would this fault (cat) show up on diagnostic? Prob. is down in rural france, nearest Audi dealer is probably on the moon! Tnks. again Ray

When you turn the ignition on, can you hear the swish of the fuel pump starting up?
John :)
Thanks John, should have said that engine starts and stops.Only occurrs when 'car secure ight in tach.clock,flashes.Think it actuates, fuel cut of mech. Have tried 'hot wiring' cut of valve when it plays up---does not have any effect. night mare! can start no prob. 20 times on trot,21st----won't! Thanks for all this assistance----Ray

intermittent faults are the most difficult to find, but if the fault is logged then a diagnostic should find it, may well be good value.

Thanks for that. Diag. seems to be the sensible option, just a 200km round trip! Other car is an '82 reg Renault 4 L.205k on the clock, always on the button! Progress? thanks and cheers,Ray

This would be a little orange key symbol you're talking about, yes?

If so it suggests your cars immobiliser isn't getting a signal from the transponder in your car key. It could be worth replacing the batteries in your keyfob remote for a couple of quid, otherwise it'll be a new key or maybe a new set of clocks.

Unless you have the SKC code for the car and know anyone with the right computer software (VagTacho iirc, not sure you can do the more modern ones with VagCom/VCDS), you need to go to a VW/Audi dealer and leave the car with them for a couple of hours.

yes, ricardus, think that is about right. Mode il LHD,ofcourse with slight differeces,eg,orange light has car symbol next to glowplug indicator.same thing though. Will change battery in fob though,as a precausion. Many thanks for everyone contributions. Ray

you can buy a vehicle specific fault code reader for around £50 that will read abs and immobiliser faults amongst others.
May be worth considering if your keeping the car.

thanks for that. good idea and will try to source one today,on ebay.thanks again--ray

That sounds interesting, will have a look at this. Sorry to be such a dinosaur, guys but really am trying to get to grips with all this hi-tech. stuff!
Thank to all, Ray.
