Thanks for all the advice - the video was very reassuring. Job done with no problems. The cross bar wasn't removable so cleaning out the old sealing material was a bit awkward. I put on a few turns of PTFE tape, tightened up the nut gradually over an hour or so until there were no drips. The tap still turns easily. Thanks again.
