I hope this question has been posted in the most appropriate part of this Forum and if possible I would like some help please. We have a pair of drive gates made out of iroko timber which may not have been maintained as they should and I wish to bring them back to a decent finish.
The problem is that the gates have been stained with some type of wood stain and this has obviously penetrated the timber. As can be seen in the image, some of the stain has flaked and become unsightly. I have sanded a few trial areas of the timber but while any loose covering comes away that which is ingrained remains. This means that prior to re-covering the timber some of it is bare and some is still carrying the initial stain.

I assume that there is no cure for this. I have tried various ideas but none worked. Is my only choice now to use paint on the gates and if so what would be the appropriate paint to use in order to cover everything, always assuming that it is available in a similar light frown colour and suitable for timber ?
Any help and/or advice would be very much appreciated.
