Iron/Steel rod you can hammer into the ground?

In big building projects you see them hammer huge steel rods into the ground.

I am thinking to do the same idea in a landscaping project... Say 1m 10mm rods, a sledgehammer then planks or sleepers to build a retaining structure.

But I've no idea what this is called. My local building supplier sells 6m reinforcement rods for concrete, could I use these or do I need something more specific?
 
The technique is key for this. You need a mate to swing the sledge while you hold the rod nice and steady and give a signal. Try something like "When I nod my head, hit it."
