I have asked a guy who does a lot of jobs for me and is very competent to install an extra double socket in my lounge, he is not Pat qualified is this essential I am beginning to feel a bit uneasy regarding insurance etc.

I don't know to be honest...... I asked him if he would do the job and he said 'yes but I am not Pat qualified and would not be able to give you a certificate'!

I assume he means he would not be qualified to test his work.

even he doesnt know then

PAT testing is not correct a bit lin "please enter your PIN number"
(since PIN stands for Personal Identification Number) so people are actualy saying "enter your personal idedentification number number"

PAT stands for Portable Appliance Testing

Part P is a building regulation (honest)

the way forward is to tell your local BCO and they will take it from there, and then issue a certificate

I'm sure he does know I think it is me that didn't understand, I suppose it would come under Part P and building regs, and it sounds as though it would be easier to just get in a qualified electricion?

Just needed what the legal requirements are for domestic electrics

still got to be part P

Not got to be notified though for extra socket in the lounge.
A minor works cert will be necessary though.

Unless of course the new socket is fed directly from CU as a new circuit!

Ask him if he can complete a minor works certificate. These are available to everyone for free. If he can complete one and has the test equipment and knowledge to complete said certificate then perhaps you may consider him competent, personally I would recommend you use an installer registered with a so called part p scheme such as NICEIC, NAPIT or ECA, and preferably on referal.

This guy removed a very dated stone 'feature' in my living room, filled the skip, cleaned up no problem.

When it came to the electrical work he said he could do.......muppet.

Just basic stuff like adding an extra socket and extending and trunking up some cable that had been left hanging behind it when the sockets had been moved up the wall. cut corners and made a general mess.

Panicked and rang a PROPER electrician I have used before for more complicated stuff and bless him he is coming at 9.00 in the morning to check it out and sort out the mess.

Lesson learned.
