Is DPC worthwhile in a garden wall?

Perhaps a stupid question, but I'm building a free-standing brick wall in the garden and wonder if putting a damp proof membrane is of any benefit?

No. Dpc's are to keep damp out of buildings, and offer no value to garden walls. They can have a negative effect by allowing the top wall to slide on it.

Although, a DPC of slate or engineering bricks in a garden wall will prevent saturation of the masonry above, meaning the wall can be rendered without risk, or different bricks can be used above.

A visqueen type DPC will create a weak point in the wall which has the potential to be very dangerous.

If the wall was to be rendered, then better to selected a suitable brick or block instead of a DPC.

Damp walls, rendered or not are not a problem in gardens.

I disagree, and there are plenty of books and documents written by many esteemed individuals that say the same as I have above.
