Just moved into a flat and want to put some vinyl flooring down. The existing floor is just floorboards in horrible condition e.g. holes, cracks here and there although the seem to be flat I mean nothing sticking out by or uneven by a a centimerter.

In many places I read that one should put a plywood underlay on the floorboards followed by any vinyl.

However I also read that one can put a hardwood(I think its refereed to as hardboard) underlay and it seems to be quite cheap.

1) Can I use hardboard underlay for my vinyl or is there a reason why one should/must use plywood.

2) What thickness should the hardboard/plywood?

6mm ply is better and usually cheaper........
