Is it picking up out there a bit??

Just dropped off a little but only because I've backed a couple of jobs to clients proving to be total planks

But I've got work booked and must have done about eight quotes for installs over the past few days

How about you?

I work for a company. But need to be flexible so am going it alone.. I have been in the industry since I was 15 an now am 30 so think its time!!;)

Sounds about the right amount of experience for giving it a go to me.

Their is a long thread in the combustion chamber titled, stop the world I want to get off

There is some useful info and a lot of differences of opinion, have a look

Picking up?, I wish.... Merchants branch Managers look glum, as do bathroom suppliers.

When I started out on my own 6 years ago, nice new shiny white bathrooms were maybe 60-65% of my work. Today, less than 10%. I can only surmise that money was easier to borrow/find/save(!) back then.

I used to look a month ahead, now its next week, so got all my regulars, landlords, shops/offices etc, average at least 1 day a week with an upmarket kitchen company.

Advertise in all the usual, google places&adwords, church parish magazines are fantastic. Just signed up to rated people, have not yet 'paid for a lead', but may need to (not the £4plus VAT for a sub £100 jobs though.....)Gave up on BT phonebook and Yell years ago. Still got a thousand flyers from two years ago to post through doors.

The CIPHE site gives me leads (usually to out of town businesses looking for some mug to a job on 30/60/90 day invoicing), GSR the same. I am sole trader member of the APHC get little from it but can offer an extended warranty on work and register appliances/unvented etc through it.

I continue to be the best I can be, optimistic - generally, and as obvious as it must seem, looking after existing customers is so much easier than finding new ones.

Im busiest Ive ever been and have one person subcontracting but its taken me 4yrs to get to this point from setting up SE, this will probably be first year I will earn more than i did when i was paye. So go for it, but expect it to take time to get to where you want to be, it wont happen overnight.

Thanks mick, paye is hell tbh I hate it and I am quite a relaxed person. I have never really done tiling / bathrooms my experience is boiler installs / breakdowns / fault finding on boilers an systems wiring up CH service. Etc I am going to do my LPG and solar thermal/PV course just to add something else to my bow mmmm any ideas ?? Might have to cover a much bigger area to start with in all local rags website etc??

i wouldnt waste your time with renewables especially pv. Stick to what you know and keep your costs to a bare minimum, build up good quality clients, be patient.
Would give more advice in cc, some of my customers read this forum :P

Look in announcement, gas fitters only forum
And you will find the what you need , if you work under a companies gs number, I would have thought their was still a way in as there are some BG guys in their.

See you on the other side.

I started doing plumbing full time about 8 months back and at first it was relatively quite. I'd get a couple of jobs a week, usually radiator installs or bathrooms.

But the past 4 months have been hectic, where i am having to turn a lot of work down because i just cannot fit it in. I found that custoemrs wanted more then plumbing work, a bit of carpentary, bit of tiling etc, so i've now branched out a bit and do other general work alongside my plumbing work. So i now fit doors, locks, the odd windows, fit kitchens, bathrooms, do tiling, even do a bit of decorating for the right price. Its meant work now is a regular thing and i've not had a day off in months.

So if you guys are able to do a bit of other work alongside plumbing, start advertising it, you'll find you get work on a regular basis and its nice to be doing something different every day.
