Is it worth making or renovating an old gate or should I buy a new one?

Any screws or bolts will be just fine, once you have applied timber preservatives.

Hi, thanks for your help, I have nearly finished, just wondering of a throw over rope type catch is ok when there's a large dog on one side?
Actually I have a bit of chain knocking about too so I guess I could use that.
I have had problems with the click in latches and bolts on gates as they often drop a bit and then don't line up.
Also do I need to fill in the old screw holes to prevent water sitting in there and rotting it?
I could use some cheap epoxy?
Or Wood filler?

Best use a two part epoxy filler Gary, but even then expect a bit of shrinkage after a while. Timber being a natural material etc.
