My house is a small 3 bed detached 20 years old.

The wiring in the consumer unit is presently wired thus:

5A - to garage
5A - upstairs lighting
5A - downstairs lighting
15A - water heater
30A - All sockets (upstairs and downstairs)
30A - Cooker

I always thought you needed a separate ring for upstairs and downstairs sockets, or is it 100m^2 total? The total floor area of the house is 80m^2 (40 per floor).

I need to get a new CU fitted and wondered if the wiring above can be retained.

it is the "norm" for then.

nowadays separate ring for kiitchen

may want to consider rewire due to age of existing (i only said consider)

as long as it's electrically safe then it's "compliant"..

it may not be adequate for your needs however..

nowadays with more and more electrical equipment going into houses it's common practice to install 3 or more rings..
1 upstairs, 1 downstairs, 1 or 2 in the kitchen.. ( general sockets and one for appliances.. )

electric showers and cookers tend to be larger these days also and a 30A cooker circuit is usually undersized for an electric hob..

Hey thanks guys. I am fitting a new kitchen so it sounds like my best course of action is to take out the existing sockets (they are all in the wrong place anyway) and install a new ring for the kitchen.

I am having a gas hob. Is it good practice to install heavy wiring to suit an electric hob, and then use a 5A FCU to protect the gas hob?

is it not true though?

if it meets the standards for passing a periodic inspection then is it not compliant with the regs?

Is a piece of sleeving missing off a cpc or an undersized meb or supply tail electrically safe?

It may be, but it is not compliant.
