is there such thing as bonding gap on a roof where the tiles are meant to join next door?

the builder said bcuz our new tiles are different to next doors they cant overlap so they have to leave 1 inch gap which is a bonding gap and he said some guttering is placed under the tiles between the gap is this true bcuz never heard of it?

Its a normally a joint between two roofs, and used when the neighbouring roofs dont match in ie, different tiles, can be done in lead or preformed glass fibre, and tiled/ slated over.
There was a topic on here not long ago, similar to what your asking but it was used as the tiling gauge was different.
I dont know how to direct you to the topic, but sure someone else here can.
