Is this a plastering job?

Hi All,
So we decided to knock out a previously filled in window which had been filled with plasterboard when an extension was built.

So now we have a lovely hole in our kitchen wall and well I kind of need to finish the job really.
My question is, how do I fill the gaps and generally 'make good'?
Do I need plaster?
Do I need a few gallons of filler?
I have uploaded some pics into a gallery here: http://www.diynot.com/network/Dangermoose/albums/10495

There is a wooden frame which I need to get the rest of the nails out of. I was thinking of staining that (or something along those lines), filling the gaps and that should do it...

thanks
