How do you tell if water tank is asbestos mixed or not?

The lid.

To answer your original question, it's a little too dark to tell, but my guess would be that it is in a loft.
You can tell if it's asbestos by examining the fibres under a microscope, and using your training and skill.

Now somehow I think you are asking for guidance before spending money on expert analysis. Here's my opinion:
The lid appears to be ill fitting, and is probably ABS plastic, with no asbestos content.
If the main tank is very rigid, fibrous, thick, and feckin' heavy then it most likely has an asbestos content. If you want it removing (from a loft?) and it is too large to fit through the loft hatch, and you don't fancy taking it out in one piece through the roof, then you should call in a specialist asbestos removal company...the consequences of distributing asbestos around your loft and house (or the next owner's house:unsure:) can be expensive and may involve detention in a place where you'd be wary of taking a shower.

Yes, the lid is not tight fit, and it easily opens and moves about when lifted from the tank. It is also light weight.
The grey colour of the tank made me suspicioius of the tank might be asbestos mixed with cement. But then it looked also like metal or ABS type, some sort of pressed shape. But it is good to know that it is not an asbestos tank. In that case, it doesn't need to be replaced and maintenance work can be done safely with just normal dust mask on. This is a good news for me.

The loft hatch is large enough for the tank to be moved without haivng to be broken into pieces - so we were going to remove it as is, if it is conclusively identified as asbestos mixed water tank.

It seems the lid is not matched to the tank, so you are back at the start.
Your last post confused me a little. At no time did I determine the tank to be asbestos or not asbestos.
Be careful.

Thanks for the alert. The lid is fully matching to the tank in size, and colour.
The top plastic cover around the lid is fully removed, and also some part of the wrapping around the tank too.
I will not be drilling or cutting the tank at all.
Just going to replace the gate valve, and then replace the float valve.

Hi Spader, did you ever get full confirmation anywhere if this tank is fibreglass? My property was built in 1976 and I have the same tank! The lid is a bit cracked but tank in overall not bad shape.
