Is this lampholder OK to use

Is this type of Lamp holder OK to use.

shouldn't the pins be dead until lamp pushed in?

I beleive the one you show is ok, however Crabtree(?) make a fitting that, as you say, only livens up when a bulb is pushed in. They are often specced on council rewires.

MK do ir did one that the pins were sheilded until the lamp was inserted. The pictured lampholders pin will always be live I believe.

Although some of the modern MK lamp holders do have a extra safety feature normally it is considered that the bulb stops anyone touching the pins.

I am sure if one was to look at the 17th Edition then 412.2.2.3 would not permit the use of the standard fitting. However 416.2.4 seems to list the bayonet lampholder complying with BS EN 61184 as an exception.

As to if it complies with BS EN 61184 you will need to visit a library to read but I would not worry as long as the outer brass is earthed.

Nothing wrong with those types of lamp holder, it would be OK even if it had a plastic outer instead of brass, as a lot of lamp holders found in the home have.

Irrelevant unless you are using double or reinforced insulation as your protective measure.

If you are going to use that lamp holder ensure it has an earth terminal and that there is an effective earth wire connected to it.

A faulty lamp could result in the metal holder and any metal fitting it formed part of becoming live and potentially lethal if touched.

This is the lamp holder

The look they are after is retro

Using silk twisted flex three core so do have an earth. That lamp holder just worried me.

If it had no lamp in it you would have an exposed part.

And the earth terminal is clear to see.

I slip a bit of heat resistant sleeve over the wires inside the lamp holder as some of these can get very hot when the holder is above the lamp.

I guess this is the reason they have a caveat - it would be impossible to change ALL the bulb holders AND bulbs in the whole UK, so they allow them to remain!!
