Hi everyone, this is my first post. I've just just bought my first house which is a project to modernise back from the 1970s. It has the traditional built in brick fireplace and rising damp in all walls.

When i took out the brick fireplace at the front of the house in the alcove the wall is black not sure if it is paint or mold and there are lots of white furry things on the wall.

I'm getting damp proofers in to install DPC in the walls and take off all plaster and replaster but this mess was not evident when they did the survey as fireplace and whatnot were still in place.

Plus the floor has collapsed in the corner from wet rot!

Damp does not rise, you chimney must have a leak at roof level.Or uncapped and not in use.
