if two independent switches were feeding two independent lights respectively
Could a master switch (2 way switch) switch off both of these lights?
how could this work?
thanks

You could have a master switch that will just turn off both lights regardless of what state they're in, but it would require that switch to be turned back on in order for any of the lights to turn back on...

If you want it to act as a two way switch, and always just change the state (e.g. if light A is on, light B is off, change it so that A is off and B is on), then that could be done with two contactors acting as intermediate switches, with the coils controlled by the switch.

If you want it to always turn both lights off regardless of what state they're in, and then be able to turn either one back on again from their individual switches, that would require a control system, there's no simple method to wire that up...

.
You wouldn't even need contactors for this, just use the end fed method (often reffered to as the old method or the conduit method) of two way switching.

[disclaimer]I've not given this more than 10s thought.[/disclaimer]

Wouldn't the "master" just toggle the state of the two lights?

Depends on how you want the lights to switch on again. Just by operating the master switch? Do you want the lights to revert to their original status when you switch the master switch on? Do you want the individula lights to switch on after they've been switched off by the master switch? With or without the master being reset?

The question needs to be defined better.
