Is this torch ok for solder ring fittings.

Hey no problem, it does make interesting reading anyway. I must admit i do tend to find when i have paid people to do work, i've rarely been happy with the work done - but i will accept that not everyone is like this at all. I just prefer to do it myself - but as rightly pointed out above, i am filled with self doubt!

I find that quality of workmanship, and the end result very variable. It is very difficult to find true, dedicated professionals these days, those few I do find, I put on speed dial.

I needed some rust prevention work done, on my car, found a local company who claimed they could do it. The end job was where they did the obvious visible bits, and left the bits that involved any effort. I asked for the four end/ wheel corners of my brakes to be renewed, they only did the two easy ones. They had my car, several days longer than they quoted. When I inspected the work, and saw what little they had bothered to do, I went back and complained, they then had a second go, during which they managed to drop the car on a toolbox or similar, and scrap the underside. This, whilst extolling the virtues, and cost, of their rust preventative chemical. The rust is already poking through again, so I'm thinking to tackle it myself. It was only a matter of rust-proofing the rear arms, the rest of the car is/was well rust proofed at the factory.

I needed a small hole in the outer skin of my back box welded up, I rang a local company to ask if they could do it, and had a long friendly chat with the owner. He said it would not be doable, because it wouldn't last/ be too brittle, but referred me to another company instead, who could custom-make me a new box. I respect that guy.

Rather than risk a much worse job, and being ripped off, I tend to do most of my own work.

As above, I'm looking to replumb a cloakroom, and i have no experience with soldering. I was going to use compression, but the joints will be boxed in and tiled, so prefer to solder, and thinking its a good skill to learn anyway?

I have a few bits of scrap copper to test/practice with some solder ring fittings, and i already have the torch as someone gave it to me. Will it be OK for this job? I am hoping i can cut/mark the pipes and solder them together on a bench, so shouldn't be needing to solder upside down or in awkward spaces?

Thanks

That torch, will be just about OK, but only when used upright. I use a Rothenburg torch, which works at any angle, and self ignites - squeeze the trigger, it ignites. Even better, the flame shuts off, as soon as the trigger is released, so it's economical on gas, burning with a tight, very hot flame, it can braze, as well as solder.

If you dry-fit, then solder at the bench, you will almost certainly need to reheat some joints, to make fine adjustments to the angles. Worth having a spray bottle of water handy, to extinguish anything which does catch fire.
