Is this waste connection unusual or wrong?

Called in to decorate a bathroom that is being constructed, and I noticed the fitters have removed the existing basin waste (that went out through the wall and into the gully) and fitted a new one that connects instead to the wc waste pipe (pic). Is this normal/OK/reasonable...? Just asking for the old lady whose house it is, and I have never seen a basin waste done this way.

As long as it goes into the upper half of the pipe it's fine
