I've got a complaint with my new motor already!

The deluded workaholic got a free milk float that he charges for free at work to dive 10 mile/day max.
Of course he's gonna praise that.
Many moons ago I worked in a railway carpentry workshop and had a free Fiat Ducati at my disposal.
I praised that rubbish van and the tools in the workshop... After all I made a lot of money using all of that for free.
Invested interest...

I live 140 miles from work. (Been there today, in fact).

And the number of people who have stuff on the drip is crazy.
You can even buy something as daft as a £10 t-shirt in instalments. It might be Klarna that is the credit provider?

Still, no different to buying from Kays / Littlewoods / Grattans etc catalogues.........................

Work bought two identical EVs at the same time. I got one, the Service manager got the other. Mine gets a hard time, because I do mega-miles. They took it off me when I hit 50,000. The Service manager had left the company by then, and his car had only 18.000 on it, so they wanted to put me in that. I begged them to sell that one while it was still worth "something" and leave me to run mine into the ground (mainly because I was curious to see what long-term reliability and battery deterioration was like). However, for some bizarre accounting reason that I don't understand, mine had been written-down far more on the books, so it made more sense to sell that. Pity. My own car is 36 years old, so I don't give the proverbial rat's ass about the age of the car I'm in (though I do take a bit of pride in the condition), so I'd much rather have hung on to the higher mileage one.

I have no wish to come across as a luddite, but what happens when they get bored of sending you updates - presumably just throw it away like an old Windows laptop - and I expect this applies to all modern cars however they're powered. Some Russian hacker will brick your car for a ransom.

Do you sometimes get the feeling you're being spied on?

Apparently a known glitch. I Google the Microsoft site and the advice is pretty much "what's your problem man?, just wait for 2 hours"
 
Jeez! Do people really fill their lives with appliances that contantly need updating and/or charging? A cooker hob update? That can't be serious?

I have a desktop and Tomtom that needs updating plus a Nokia and shaver that require regular charging. That's already too much to be going on with. :(

They're beating a path to plenty of other shores besides ours. In fact, if we don't get our national finger out, we might be hopping in those dinghies and heading off to look for a better place to live ourselves!

So.. get rid of them if it's too much of a problem for you? Nobody's forcing you to have a PC or a phone, or a sat-nav. I think they still sell road atlases and A-Zs... :rolleyes:

I have to admit I don't understand the need for a hob to be needing updates.

Ours isn't. But I'm guessing that if you're out for a walk, it might be handy to tell the hob to come on and start warming the stew that you left on it, ready for your return? Octopus is offering free electricity tomorrow afternoon between specified hours. Maybe a "smart" hob would be useful in coming on when it receives a signal the the leccy is cheaper? Dunno, just guessing. Or I guess, the other way round - you got out for a walk... "did I leave the hob on...?" No problem, tap the appropriate app on your phone and reassure yourself!

Of course, once anything has software in it, that software IS going to need updating - either to add new functions as people think of them, or to add security patches as hackers find new ways of screwing them up!
 
This does sound like a shockingly bad PDI by your dealer?! We have to update the software on every car at final inspection before it leaves the factory. The dealer should do the same before delivery, to catch, as you say, any that might have come out during the time it's been sitting in their showroom (or a field, or whatever).
A bit more info. The other day, I noticed that my free six months trial of Bluelink Pro for a car that was registered on 1st Sept expires on 7th Nov. That’s not 6 months. I contacted Hyundai, who contacted Bluelink. They contacted me and said it was activated by the dealer on the 8th May. I contacted the dealer to ask why and they said that they access the Bluelink when the car comes to them from the factory to see that all the systems are functioning on the vehicle. At the end of that check, they have two options, exit or initialise and they suspect the wrong option was chosen. Anyway, the dealer said for me to buy a full years subscription to the Pro version (£99) and they will pay for it. On handover, the salesman sat in the car with me and talked me through the setup but perhaps they should have set it up the day before and carried out any updates. It’s had three updates so far since I’ve owned it - it’s worse than an iPhone!

Well, at least they held their hands up and sorted the Bluelink for you! But yes. I expect the updates will settle down after a bit. Mine does 2-3 a year now. That said, with anything that runs software, that'll be the way of it from now on, I'm afraid. Just like Microsoft / Apple etc all do periodic software updates that require you to restart your computer. These will usually be bug fixes and "patches" to close up new vulnerabilities that have been discovered. Hackers never sleep! When you think about it, with something as safety-critical as a car, the possible consequences of a cyber attack don't bear thinking about! In the EU, we have new cybersecurity regulations designed to minimise the chances of that. Cars are going to get a lot more difficult to "hack" (and yes, that doesn't bode well for remaps)!
 
Everything these days seems to be a computer first, and it's original primary function seems to be secondary. Same with my brother's Sky Glass tv. Appears to be a computer with a large screen attached. Has more than it's fair share of glitches too - just like any pc.

My LG, on a scan, picks up three separate regional Freeview areas, and asks you to pick your local one. Quite frequently, I will switch it on, only to find it has decided to change the local one, to one of the more distant ones, with no option to change it back. I have to do a full rescan.
