Can anyone clarify this for me? When daisy-chaining downlighters, I am aware that the junction box has to be both fixed securely AND accessible. Are both regulations compulsory? I ask because where my lights are positioned, there are no joists and the lights cannot be accessed from above, so is it ok to push the JB to one side before pushing the light into place?

Cheers for any advice.

Cable terminations need to be free from the stresses caused by flexing of the cable. This is normally achieved by clipping the cable and fixing the junction box. However, as you rightly say, all joints need to be accessible for inspection, testing and maintenance.

So you need to be able to retrieve the junction box via the downlight holes without stressing the terminations. Also you don't want to have both solid cable and flexible cable under the same screw... so, you use one of these:

See the cable restraints?
