Can anyone tell me if it is necessary to put jointing compound on a radiator bleed valve if you open it to let air out? It's threaded so I thought it might be better, but it's difficult to get out and a lot of water comes out so it's difficult to get out and in again without making a mess.

No, it is not required. You should only need to crack the bleed valve open half a turn or so, not remove it completely.
