When connecting the radiator to the valves is it best to put a bit of ptfe tape on the thread and some jointing compound on the joint where the tails meet the valves .

Use PTFE on the threaded part of the tail that you insert into the radiator.

As for the tails 'meeting the valves'. 3/4 inch ground IMO is best done with a smear of LSX.

1/2 inch (15mm) and you will have an olive on compression.

PTFE on this is a poor job.

There is no need for PTFE or jointing compound on the threads of compression or union fittings - the nuts just hold the joint together.

If the joint doesn't seal 'dry', just a smear of jointing compound on the olives of compression fittings or the joint faces of unions should be all that's needed.

If that doesn't work, there's usually something else amiss - grit in the joint, misaligned pipes, crushed olive etc. etc.
