Hi

I’m just wondering what is the best method of fixing floor joists for a two storey side extension?

Would it be best to fix a timber bearer to the existing gable end of the house and add joist hangers to support the floor joists at that end and then build the other end of the joists into what will be the internal wall of the new gable end on the other side (specification says 3.6n Thermalite shields all the way up)

would this be better than cutting out bricks on the existing gable end to sit the joists on? I’m trying to reduce noise transfer as it is a semi detached and was thinking by using a bearer and joist hangers that this would reduce noise transfer?

Thank you for any advice

I did the bearer plate on mine, as didn’t fancy chopping each joist out. No issues. But suspect it’s seen as the less robust method out of the two. If the existing wall’s got a cavity, the noise transfer issue isn’t really a concern either way.
