as far as I understand it all joints etc must be accessable, right?, and there is no mention of the same being disallowed in lofts/attics/ if there is I cant find it, this is a remark made by a contractor, I alway when possible try to avoid any joins at all, but this guy brings every thing into switch back boxes and terminates earths, neutrals, in strips I was always taught the only wires you need in a switch back box are the funtional IE supply/ switched live and earths (if not metal boxes) and neutrals should be terminated in a JB as near to the switch dropper as in convienient how he got the switch plate on one with 4 T&E and a 3 core I will never know any thoughts ?

With the use of European light fittings using the ceiling rose as a junction box presents some problems and to use the switch box as a junction box instead does help with integration with Europe and allows items like PIR's to be fitted to switches since they then have a neutral.

The only down point is use of non standard junction blocks within the backing box but that has to be far better than latter removing ceiling rose and shoving the cables in ceiling void. So I see nothing wrong in using the backing box as a junction box as long as deep enough.

With the increasing use of downlighters, fancy light fittings, and more lighting in general, it is now more usual to run all cables back to the switch.
As you know.

I recall various 'rules' that you can't have a neutral block at a switch; or you can have a neutral block, but it must be fixed.

With today's modern lighting also comes a requirement to fit dimmer switches, which certainly makes lack of space a problem.
