Hired a core drill and encountered a few problems. When I got home the chuck key was from another drill and didn't fit proplerly and the shaft that fits between the core and the drill had a fair bit of play. Job has now been done as I didn't have time to be going back and forth trying to sort this out.

Before I complain to the hire shop I want to know from you guys is it normal for there to be play on the core assembly which is attached to the drill? It was pretty wonky and when the drill was switched it the play was amplified.

Thanks

No its not normal.

The better core drills don't have chucks, they have a threaded spindle onto which the core (or extension piece) screws directly. No play at all. They do have a pilot drill (unless they are used in a drill press type assembly) and the pilot is usually a poor fit into a taper socket.

Thanks for replying. Yes the extension piece did have a fair amount of play which didn't seem right to me. I did get the job done admittedly (not without issues) but renting out tools not fit for purpose really annoys me so will be chasing them up about this. I certainly won't be renting from them again. Moral of the story is check stuff out before renting if at all possible.

Cheers

Was it a small independent - or a large chain .?

If you're a plumber you should consider buying one. Essential bit of kit.

I've got a marcrist ddm2. Probably more than I require as I haven't used it to its full capability 200mm. I've only used for 4" flues and poo pipes. It also wet cores which I haven't used yet but it's a great machine. They're cores are fantastic too. A little dear but you can tell the difference between them and cheaper ones as they save you time.

And I once heard that time is of the essence.

Makita do an ok one.

National chain. In communication with the manager at the mo, out of the total cost of the hire of £58 for the day I was given £12 discount due to the wrong chuck key being supplied and a wonky extension piece for the diamond core.

Not happy with this as kit obviously wasn't fit for purpose or checked before releasing.

Don't use one often enough to even contemplate buying one.

Next time pop into Travis Perkins, who will Hire you Hilti core drill

Hilti is the best out there ,with no substitute......................

How can you claim the drill was not fit for purpose? when you have already stated that you had no problems/issues coring the hole with it!
Yes it should have had the correct chuck key and it should not have been drilling wonky but you should have then stopped proceeding with the task at hand and then taken it up with the hire company.
Just on the safety issue alone, they can give you a right bite when they jam.

I'm slowly replacing all my tools with Hilti.

They are, without a doubt, the dogs gonads.

The combi drill is superb. Went through Makitas best one in a year. Have since had a Hilti for coming up to 2 years and it's as good as the day I got it and I wouldn't buy anything else now.
They're not cheap but you get what you pay for.
