for a BBQ? would the bags of ready mixed concrete and mortar ( the kind you just add water to ) be any good for a newbie?

would you recomend one of those "brickie" tools, the red plastic tray thing that's supposed to make laying blocks idiot proof?

Redi mix bags are an expensive way of doing it but they are fine for small jobs which don’t warrant buying sharp/building sand in bulk; I use them quiet frequently.

Forget The Brikie tool you’d have trouble trying to use one on a barbie anyway unless you intend one the size of small shed! Just use a decent spirit level & some patience.

was thinking along the lines of 2ft deep, 6ft long..

fair size grill in the middle, high back and paving / granite slab either side as a counter..

If you are building that size a bag of dust and fe bags of building sand is a cheaper option.
The bricky is only as good as the first course which you have to lay yourself!

Good luck
