Just when I did not want a problem on my 2002 Renault Scenic 16V !

My first one is resting until I can fit a new exhaust clamp!

Now my second one will not turn the starter motor!

The power is being applied by the ignition switch in the start position.

But where does the power go next?

Unless the auto lever is in the park or N position the starter motor is not powered so how is that interruption made ( and where ).

Presumably the starter motor solenoid is on the motor which I suppose is at the rear of the engine and only accessible from underneath?

Any suggestions welcomed!

Yes all automatics have override on starter via the selector leaver, unless it was in P or N position, but assuming you have power leaving ignition and nothing is suspected with the selector switches, the current can only then be interrupted by an immobiliser, there after it should reach the starter solenoid, which in turn then starts cranking.

However, don'tr take your starter motor for guaranteed, depending on their design, in modern starters the solenoid current also goes via the windings, so if the windings have become open circuit i.e. if any of the brushes have gone, then it won't even click, or make any sort of noise like even a clicking noise of the solenoid if the starter motor has had it, on a Cavalier, I just pulled in front of a fish & chips to pick up my takeaway, next thing absolutely nothing, not even a tick, so got some lads to push start my car and got home, took me two days to remove the starter motor and fit a recon motor, because like in yours it is mounted right at the back of the engine accessible only from below! nothing is simpler any more Tony.

But if you have two such cars, get a Haynes manual, it will tell you exactly from the wiring diagram if there is any relays used in its starting circuit.

Looks like a real pain to replace the starter motor on the street.

Has anyone ever replaced one on this model? How long?

Awkward as hell as its right at the back of the motor.....you can do it from wheel ramps but seriously an independent garage will do it in half an hour on the ramp.
Disconnecting the battery is vital on this one....you're guaranteed to short things out with a spanner. Clever dick here did the job on a diesel Scenic, and the arc burnt through the turbo oil return pipe
No profit on that one!

Thats exactly my assessment.

But its parked on the road and not starting.

Found a tech who specialises in Renaults and I think that I may just call him and let him do it, much as I hate paying for a job that I could in theory do myself.

I watched a video on Youtube and silly video was speeded up so it looked like a 10 min job!
