I have bought my first flat and am planning to lay an engineered oak floor over the entire lower floor. I've spoken to dealers and have been told that the quality of Kahrs is very unreliable these days. I am told that it's often manufactured in China (though not sure why this should necessarily mean poor quality) and that the company is in some financial difficulty, resulting in poorer standards. On the other hand Admonter was recommended to me as the best engineered wood available.
The dealer I spoke to sold both Kahrs and Admonter, but naturally the Admonter flooring is far more expensive. Both products are 3-layer engineered, and in both cases I would be going for a very dark-finish oiled oak. The main issues as I understand them would be:
1. Does the floor warp, separate or buckle over time
2. Does the colour fade with time and/or sunlight
3. Does the floor stain or otherwise get damaged if things are spilled
4. Is the floor resistant to scratches, dents etc from normal use
5. How good does the floor look (quality of finish, matching of wood, etc)
As I say, Kahrs is about 30-50% the price of Admonter, so if there's no real difference between the two in practice then I might as well save my money and go for Kahrs. But if I'm really getting a superior product that will look better, wear better and last longer then I think it's worth spending the extra.
Can anybody offer any advice from experience? In particular, has anybody had problems with Kahrs in recent years?
