I have revovered many an engine where looking through through the exhaust port reveals piston scoring with a clean up of the cylinder wall with brick acid,wet n dry, maybe a quick hone and a new piston and ring.Ye gods I can't say I have, but it's interesting to know!

Good thinking! I find many small engine barrels are Nikasil coated these days so any sort of hone is a no-no.
Fortunately these don't suffer from pick up too badly, but the piston suffers big time.
