You can patrol the streets, and maybe knock on someone’s front door if you see something suspicious. But you don’t set up cctv in each house to monitor possible crimes, there has to be something to go on.

But maybe social media has added a new element. And maybe we have to adapt. It creates a whole new way for crimes to be easily organised. I don't know where the balance lies. Someone else mentioned that social media is already monitored for terrorist attacks.

Think about a situation where either a far left or far right group are planning on social media to set fire to a hotel with the aim of killing the residents. What would the correct response be. To let it go ahead and then later try them for murder. Or to try to get ahead of the game and be waiting for them outside the hotel in an attempt to stop them carrying out the murders.
