Hello
My wooden french doors are locked shut, the key was jammed and we ended up accidently snapping it. I can see from its cross section that the key is aligned to the keyhole. We wish to replace the handle and lock anyway, but can anyone suggest what we should do without having to resort to calling a lcoksmith please?
many thanks.

sorry for lack of detail in pics

If you can get to the outside, you've the option of removing the hinge pins or grinding the hinges off (assuming hinge bolts aren't fitted). Call a locksmith (£40ish) to open it, then change the lock yourself. Weigh this cost up against your own time in faffing about trying to open it, repairing any damage done to the door/frame etc.

If the key is aligned in the keyhole, then from the outside you can tap it out with a long nail or something and a hammer.

Or from the inside if you can't get any long nose pliers or tweezers on the key, then drill the lock just to the side of the keyhole with something like a 5mm bit to widen it, and then you can grip the key with the pliers or tweezers.

This is what a locksmith would most likely do

If you don't have another key, then you will have to drill the keyhole with a 10 or 12mm bit to break the levers and then jig it with a big screwdriver.

Or a locksmith could pick it

if the doors are not too tight a fit you could always undo the bolts on both doors and open them both together, they should pop open, this will bend the bolt on the lock which will need replacing anyway if youve snapped a key in it because of a fault with it?
id be inclined to call a locksmith anyway, with the door being rebated a replacement lock might be hard to fit if you cannot get an exact replacement to the one in already,do you have the original key ? what does it say on the bow? is it brass or steel ?
