My neighbour is adament that he wants to paint his roof. I can hear all the naysaers already and I agree with you. Anyway he thinks it will be a doddle and he just needs to use masonry paint. I have tried many times to convince him it is not a good idea at all(and that if you did do it you would think you'd need something more specialised than masonry painy) but he is adament.

To be fair his roof tiles are about 40 years old and do look very tired and unsightly(much like mine do too). Although there is hardly any mold growth.

The only reason he want to paint his roof is for aesthetic reasons. So I have been trying to find facts about painting roof tiles so that he can see it is more than me just saying it isn't a good idea. I'm surprised that I haven't found anything factual just opinions on both sides of the argument.

Does anyone have any factual links?

Also does anyone have some links to reviews good and/or bad on roof paints. So far I have only found Kingfisher Kolourseal roof coating but can't find anything positive or negative.

Please don't give me opinions(either way)?

Lastly my gut feel is it isn't a good idea and the paint would soon start to wear off, however new roof tiles have a dye/paint on them(whatever they are made of is left after that dye wears away). So actually how is it different??

All help greatly received!!

As long as your house is detached - let him get on with it

Why are you so interested in what your neighbour does? I couldn't care less what mine do.

I should have called him my friend rather than my neighbour. But he is my neighbour too. He also wants my help to do his roof ... Hence the question on here.
His house is semidetached but not to mine. He talked to his semidetached neighbour and said he would do the whole roof with the help of me, the neighbour said yeah go on then.

Like I said I could do with links to factual articles either way.

There aren't really any factual articles because it's simply paint that goes onto tiles. It's not a coating just plain and simple paint glorified by some as a coating. The only things you'll find are opinions.

If he really wants to paint his roof he will have to jet wash it first to clean them. If he paints over dirty or unclean tiles the paint will come off after a few years. But then if he jet washes his tiles he will be taking a fair few years of life off them in just a day plus disturbing any mortar.

Just pray he doesn't go for anything really red and orangey or it will look hideous.
