Kitchen Fan - T&E to L, S/L, N

Replacing a kitchen fan - and got one that has L, S/L, N connection. It is fed by the existing T&E. I thought that putting the L to the S/L connection would enable it to be operated as a simple fan with no run-on, but it doesn't. Instead I have to simulate a L, S/L feed by making a connection with a small piece of Live wire between the L, S/L.

1. Is this normal for a L, S/L, N fan?
2. Is this OK?

Yeah that's fine. Some fans require the link when not using the timer!
