Hi guys,

Been changing the ceiling lights in the house, done 3 with no problems as its like for like.

Come to the kitchen and I regret not taking a picture first!

Kitchen has 2 lights (was hanging spotlights using a block for neutral, earth and live) with 1 light switch with 2 buttons, now I can get the right light to work fine from the swtich but I cant get the left one working. The right one is the picture below, the left light has 3 cables only (was on a block) but i cant get to the ceiling as it seems its been plastered over (might cut it as last resort). But the 2 lights worked independently via the switch so am confused!

On this right light, there is an extra yellow cable (pictured), I've figured that this is the 'switch' cable for the left light as its the same color at the light switch and the blue one is the right light.

Now with the red cable (thicker sleeve) next to the yellow one, with that in, the left light is constantly on and light switch has no effect. So i've worked out that this is the live cable for the left light. So where does the yellow cable go so the left light works via the switch?

Please advise as I'm getting confused trying to work it out.

Hi,

I've read your post a couple of times and can't understand it - you haven't described the set-up very well. :)

If the picture you've uploaded is the right light, could you also upload a picture of the left light wiring and a picture of the back of the switch - showing connections in place.

Cheers.

Ah, sorry if I wasn't clear. I'm not back till next weekend. I'll try and explain as simple as I can. The picture is the right light. The left light only has a connection block with live, earth and neutral. I think the actual 6 wiring is tucked above the ceiling hence I'm using what's there.

The light switch itself seems to be bridged so the power bit has a link from the right switch to the left. Both seems to have their own earth.

If your still confused then I'll update this thread next week with pics of all the wiring.

At the rose pictured, you need to put the yellow wire and the red that goes to the light that don't work properly both together in a separate piece of 5 amp connector block.

ah ok, i might test this with the old block, would it say 5 amps on it?

if not i can go get some.

i wont know till the weekend but that sounds right.

Faintly, perhaps. 15 amp block would do, but harder to get in the ceiling rose.

sure its not a 5 amp? the ceiling rose connectors are quite small and right light work fine.
