Fitting a kitchen with a mate this week and today client asked if we could fit an extra socket. I said no, mate said yes! Looked at existing setup and I'm convinced it's unsuitable for its intended use.
Radial is in 2.5mm cable, 16A MCB at CU (RCD protected side of split load unit) and has five double sockets on it. Maximum cable run from CU to last socket is no more than 15m but more likely 10m.
On this radial they intend to use:
Single oven
Microwave
Kettle
Toaster
Washing Machine
Hob Ignition
and anything else that will be used in kitchen.
An argument between me and my mate followed resulting in him eventually agreeing that we wouldn't fit the extra socket. Aside from the fact that it's notifiable, it would be adding additional strain to what is effectively an overloaded circuit.
The way I see it - they've two options. Convert to a ring main with 32A MCB or fit a gas oven instead.
Also, can a 2.5mm radial be protected with a 20A MCB instead?
