Can you pls help? We are moving our kitchen light switch and have heard that there are certain regulations regarding the position of the switch.

There will be a vertical radiator on one wall and nothing on the other - however, I have been informed that the switch must go outside the kitchen and in the hall. Is this correct? I really don't want a switch in the hall.

Look forward to any advice. Thanks J

no it's complete nonsense.

There are some rules regarding electrical outlets in room which contain a fixed bath or shower, I bet your kitchen doesn't.

A height of about 4ft above the floor is OK, it can be reached by most fit adults and children, and also by people in wheelchairs. But if you are in an old private house (not a new build or open to the public) you can put it at any height you want. You can have a pull-cord ceiling switch if you feel like it.

The switch has to be suitable for its position, so not where it will get splashed with water from the sink, or subject to steam or heat from the cooker.

Cables and electrical items in hot positions (including over radiators) have a reduced safe service life. You have probably noticed the wires in old light fittings or heaters going brittle and cracking.

If the vertical radiator is in the way of where the switch should go, then you may have to put the switch in the hall.

The switch is of no use behind the door.

If you have room to put the switch where you want it, and there are no other factors against having it there, then it looks like it will be ok.

Perhaps there is some other reason it's not practical to have the switch in the usual place.
