Kitchen upstands

I'm planning a kitchen and was wondering if upstands are always placed on top of a worktop or if they can also go behind in order to push the worktop forward? I could do with an extra 2cm on my worktop depth.

Fine as long as it does not foul use of any draws.

They'd normally go on top, as the wall may go in and out. But if the walls straight, and then add a piece of wood maybe 17mm at the back of the worktop, and then the upstand would at least cover the top slightly.
