These people appear to want almost £1000 a year for 4 routine visits, which seems to me rather excessive. Has anyone got any other suggestions? Anyone more local?

You may well find a local firm who will charge a little less.
HOWEVER, travelling time has to be taken into account. Its the kind of job that would really need two people for safety reasons.
Furthermore the nature of the work is such than many would not consider it very pleasant. Hardly a job to do and then rush out to take the girlfriend out to dinner without having at least an hour to shower, change clothes and apply aftershave!
So those charges dont surprise me!

It all depends on the plant is really? If you weren't so far from me I would be able to supply you with a quotation and wouldn't be no where the £250/ service.
