Knocking down Firebreast

The joists were contained within the structure of the breast, however they go into the wall, I'm sure just as much as all the other joists go into the wall.

Noggin? on plan? Errr not quite sure what you mean there, can't quite visualize your reccomendation, any chance of laymans terms... icon_confused.gif

Pinhead, I just went back and looked through the locked version of this thread. If the joists either side of the concrete hearth which run between the wall and the joist/s running parallel to the wall are a) adequately built into the wall (min 75mm), b) nailed to the parallel joist and c) under the edges of the hearth and also the front of the hearth is supported on the parallel joist/s, then it's all fine and dandy and there's no need for you to do anything, or learn about noggins etc!

just had another look. The hearth does not go over the top of the joist on either side but instead extends under the floor/ceiling at a thickness of about 5 inches.

That's some pretty thick concrete and I've been bashing at it with a hammer and drilling into it but it didn't want to budge
