I heard someone talk about a 500 KVA genny today so how do i work KVA out?

therefore 500kva genny will give you 1250 Amps worth of juice!
Not quite. Although the gen will be 400v, the output will be star, and used as such.
You would get 724amp per phase.
This can be derived in two ways :-
(500,000 / 3) / 230 = 724amp
or
{500,000 / (400/sq-rt 3) } / 3 = 724amp
Very similar to how we deal with the DNO. A medium industrial supply (ok small) is 138kva when talking to the DNO, but I know this is 200amp per phase supply.
