Sec 18 maybe, on rare occasions, you would avoid jail. Certainly not for sec 20.
In the case of this thug, his intent was there, it was only because he was old, fat, unfit and p***ed that he wasn't able to carry out his intent.
The PM could enact a bill to sort out this for now and the future. Irrespective of the colour of the MP this behaviour is not something that is acceptable

Knee jerk reaction.
He's not the 1st mp to have served time.
I'd prefer a long term thought out and approved system that automatically happens, not something that's down to whoever is PM. Any new law won't happen in time to be relevant to this case.
Previous, and probably future PMs don't have the same standards.

None of these issues were raised when the other lot were in power.

But to make it clear. I don't care what party they are from, nobody should be above the law
OK magistrate then, I didn't say he wasn't guilty, he should have been given bail pending an appeal.
Sending him straight to jail without an appeal was excessive.
As has been pointed out by others, John Prescot punched a bloke and wrestled with him but he was never charged.
The issue I have with the sentence he received, is that the magistrate should have allowed him bail so he could appeal.
Sending someone straight to prison isn't right.

If we expect our public servants to be held to account, then they should be held to the same account not better or worse, just the same
He clearly lost his rag and turned to violence -I cant see how that is acceptable behaviour for an MP

If he had stopped after 1 hit I'd have some understanding, if there was a satisfactory reasoning for why he did it.

Yup. Still hiding and swerving. Only to be expected. He likes asking questions but will never answer one. I wonder why?
