The lady of the house has asked for a laminate floor in the kitchen, the vinyl is past its best now. I have never used laminate at all, and am seeking some general information, please:- any types to avoid, what I should be looking for, what type of underlay for a concrete floor, and will any extra heat insulating layer needed? Any advice will be appreciated, thank you.

Look at fibreboard underlays for the best product to lay it on, most manufacturers will offer a thin foam or better fibreboard option. You will get exactly what you pay for, the biggest name out there is probably Quickstep, Pergo is the original laminate floor product and probably best on the market for wear, durability, engineering and finish, stuff like Balterio is cheap for a reason. Generally speaking, the better laminates will be alot easier to fit, no matter how similar the install systems look. Our fitters swear that Pergo generally fits 30% quicker than other laminates they come accross, if they get a private job enquiery for fitting customers supplied laminate from B&Q etc, they rarely take the work on as they KNOW the job will be complicated by the poor engineering of the product and joints etc.
