Hi there,

I would like to know if it is possible to laminate the stairs. I have a 3 bedroom house which is fully laminated except for the stairs which is carpeted. I have a pet dog and find it very hard having to hoover the stairs and it does my back in. It is really tough trying to get out the pet hairs as they get into the pile and it takes forever to get from the top to the bottom. I wonder if anyone knows where I can go to get this done. I have heard of an italian company that do laminate specially for stairs. If I can remember well I think it is called Scala or something like that. It is specially made for stairs and has nosing.

I would be much obliged if anyone could help me with any information.

Thanks,

Chris

Personally I think this type of flooring is downright dangerous on stairs and fitting nosings does very little to alter that fact that laminate flooring has the slip resistance of an icerink. The chances are that you/family will end up slipping down the stairs.

I suspect that your vet fees will increase too (due to your dog descending the stairs quicker than it planned)

Having said that I am personally not familiar with the system you describe in your post.

Over to the wood specialists....

nothing good can come of removing any traction on stairs. If the dog hairs are taking too long to hoover either a) get a better hoover (dyson + animal brush head) or b) stop the dog from using the stairs.

you'll end up with an injured dog, and injured people if you laminate the stairs.

I worked on a housing project a few years back, developer wanted laminate on staircases and against our advice we were duty bound to detail something that worked from a building point of view and that was as 'safe' as possible. Ended up with a contrasting hardwood nosing on each step.

About 10am on the first day the show home opened (with laminate on the stairs) about the 3rd person to view the show home slipped whilst walking down the stairs and broke her ankle. The show home was closed and the Developer fitted carpet that day to the show home stairs and every other staircase on the development.
