Hello all,

I have a laminate kitchen work surface which is badly faded from its original dark grey colour. I have considered replacing the whole work surface which is configured in horseshoe fashion, however, it would require 3 x 3m pieces to cut into shape. Online delivery companies seem to offer kerbside delivery only and not into my property, a first floor flat. As a result the difficulty and cost of full worktop replacement is quite considerable.

As an alternative option I have researched ways of restoring the original laminate surface by using a product to paint over it, however I can only find ones which are black in colour. Ideally I am after a wood (either walnut or oak) effect laminate surface. I wish to lighten my kitchen so black is not an option.

Hope someone can advise on options. Thank you!

I am not aware of any (paint on) product that will suffice. Whilst not wanting to malign the firm that claims that their black paint will be durable, I, err, don't believe them.

You could possibly re-laminate the worktops but if you have post formed (ie rounded edges) I don't think you will be successful.

You can paint laminated chipboard worktops but the sad reality is that they will look awful within a week or two.

Sorry, I appreciate that I am not giving you the answer that you want to read. I have however spent many years as a decorator and specialised in kitchen units/worktops for quite a while.

With regard to the kerb side delivery, you would need someone to cut the worktops to length and unless you want nasty joins, you will need someone to use a router to profile the joins anyway. If you go down that path, let them arrange the delivery.

You will not achieve a wood effect with paint and as mentioned it would soon fail.Fitted worktop for a friend, 6th floor , no lift, so it is achievable.

Have used a company to fit quartz overlay on worktops in the past, its not diy but the result was excellent.

That was on 700mm wide worktops, also in a flat. Worked out at being cheaper than replacing with standard worktop's.

2 years of use and still in perfect condition,:)
