my wairing is as follows down stairs is 3 red 1 black 1 yellow 1 blue.
up stairs is the same please help.

How many lights do these switches control?
I take it you have one light at the bottom and one at the top of the stairs?
Are the switches single or double ones ?

Hi sorry it is a two switch up stairs and a two switch down stairs. i am really sorry for bothering you but i need help as my husband has walked out on me thanks for all your help.

You are not supplying enough info for anyone to assist you ,we need to know which wires go to which terminals on which switch. Please do not take this the wrong way as I do not mean to patronise you , but are you sure you feel comfortable tackling this sort of task?

If you look carefully, you will find that you have two cables in one switch and two cables in the other?
If so, proceed as follows:

Turn off the power to the fusebox

On the switch with two cables you should have one cable with two wires (black and red) and another cable with 3 wires (red yellow and blue).

With the 3-wire cable connect:
red to terminal marked C on the switch
yellow to terminal marked L1
blue to terminal marked L2
With the 2-wire cable connect:
red to L1
black to L2

On the switch with one cable (it should be a 3 wire cable) connect:
red to terminal marked C on the switch
yellow to terminal marked L1
blue to terminal marked L2

Then turn on th epower and all should be OK.

There are drawings on how to do it at http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7553&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=30

If your installation has different cable colours, or layout, or different switch markings either come back here and ask before you do anything or call in a competent sparky.
Good ones are available at www.competentperson.co.uk

Hope he comes back. Was it all over the lights?

I believe that you are wrong in this instance taylor...

she has a single red in both boxes as well as a T+E ( red and black ) and a 3c+E strapper...

AT EACH BOX..

the red and black from one cable should go to one switch.
the red, yellow and blue from the other cable should go to Com, L1 and L2 respectively..
ALL earth wires ( the bare copper wire that should be sleeved in green and yellow tube ) should go to the earth screw of the back box

IN ONE BOX

the single red should go to L1 on the same switch as the 3 core

IN THE OTHER BOX

the single red should go to L2 on the same switch as the 3 core.
