Politicians and political parties are always x years behind what the masses are already aware of.

You don't think that some vociferous campaigners preach populist arguments and incite the massesn to support their personal ambitions?

So how come religion is so popular?

If the origin of those rescued is indertimate, there is a potential for being accused of people trafficking.

Also, if the rescue occurs at the edge of the territorial waters, why would British boats choose to go further afield to land their survivors, when they are familiar with their home waters. Much of France's coast is considered dangerous waters.

There is no obligation on landing survivors at the nearest point of safety.

No: You are hereby refused entry to UK waters, please turn back. under UNCLOS article 25.

You can't literally "push other boats". So if they refused and continued on their course, you cannot endanger their survival.
Article 25 says:

1. The coastal State may take the necessary steps in its territorial sea to prevent passage which is not innocent.

An intention to apply for asylum can hardly be described as "not innocent."
And you cannot endanger their survival on that basis.

This would allow them to be intercepted in French waters by any vessel who deemed them to be in distress.

I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but how do you board and/or rescuse those who will be in distress, when you try.
You are obligated to offer assistance, but those "in distress" are not obligated to accept it.

How long do you think the home made rib with 5 gallons of fuel and a fake 15hp outboard can sit there in a standoff against a comfortable coastal ship with several thousands litres of diesel, water, toilet, heating etc.

Does UK have 10 comfortable coastal ships with several thousands litres of diesel, water, toilet, heating etc. available to create a stand-off?
And when the asylum seekers then become "distressed" by the actions of those comfortable coastal ships with several thousands litres of diesel, water, toilet, heating etc., how would that be viewd by the British public?

It may be. Can you provide stats to support your assertion.
If you are right it indicates the failure of succesive governments' policies.

But it's still only about 10% of the total immigration.
A much larger group of immigrants are the dependents of the primary immigrant. But to make it more difficult for the dependents to accompany the primary immigrant will discourage the number of primary immigrants. That would seriously affect the potential of UK.

It's like complaining about the few millionaires choosing to leave UK and claiming that it leaves UK impoverished, when the vast majority choose to stay.
