The kitchen floor in our 1970 bungalow has two layers of vinyl sheeting over the original Oakstrips. How can I remove the vinyl without damaging the oak?

Depends how it is fixed down really. It may be loose or it may be glued and if I recall properly contact adhesive or similiar was common. Try warming the glue with a hot air gun whilist pulling slowly.
